Many people did not move to chicago just becasue of its looks. A lot of Chicago's site factors contributed to the early settlement such as its close location to Lake Michigan which provides transportation in and out of the city between different industries. Also, early settlers liked how Chicago had flat, fertile land for growing crops. Besides the site factors, many situation factors contributed to Chicago becoming an industrial city. Since Chicago is a very busy city, with a lot of cars, trains, planes and different transportation routes for people to get around to where they need to go, Chicago is able to attract more people based off of those simple things. Chicago also has highway systems that can bring new people into the neighborhood, and transport people out. Calumet Heights is an neighborhood located near higher land called Stony Island Ridge. The population is mainly Africa American and as people move farther up the Stony Island Ridge and reach the neighborhood Pill Hill at the top, the socio-economic status goes up as well. In the year 1881, an railroad was built along the western side of Calumet Heights which led to the development of the neighborhood. In the year 1920, Calumet Heights had over mostly 3000 foreign-born residents and by the following decade, the population had doubled. Most of the population consisted Poles, Italians, Irish and Yugoslavians. The residents who lived in single family homes and apartments along Stony Island Avenue between 87th and 91st street. Between 1960 and 1980, African Americans began to move into the neighborhood. In 1970, African Americans made up 45% of the population and by 1980, 86%. Calumet Heights has mainly remained middle class with a lot of profession workers who live in the single family homes.
